Eco Company TV Show - Teens Going Green

Yesterday was a lazy day around the house for us. One of the boys has a stomach bug and the baby has a nasty cold, so we stayed inside and took it easy all day. After we had lunch and I got the twins down for their nap, I was checking the TV listings on my phone to see if there was something my 5 year old and I could watch. That is when I saw a listing for Eco Company. I had never heard of this show so I immediately turned it on to check it out.

I had no idea what to expect but I was just excited that their was a show about the environment on and it said it was for kids. So the episode we turned on is following 2 stories: one is a teen on a quest to get 1 million trees planted across the United States and the other about two teens that reuse vintages clothes and accessories found at flea markets to make new fashions. It is really inspiring to see a younger generation so passionate about the environment. I realized that this is show about teens going green but I still enjoyed watching it and I think it would be good not just for teens but tweens as well.

A little bit about the show from their site:

"A whole new generation has made the environment, climate change and going green their cause. Eco Company was created to chronicle the passions of this new generation and to answer their questions. Eco Company is a national TV show hosted by a dynamic and diverse group of teens who combine their natural curiosity with their enthusiasm for preserving the planet they will inherit.

Most of all, Eco Company profiles individual teens and organizations who are making a difference. These inspirational stories showcase teens who have made a commitment to being green and to having an impact on their schools, in their communities, in their homes and in their personal lives. Often their impact goes beyond their own communities. That is what Eco Company is all about. In addition, this website gives teens throughout the U.S. and around the world the opportunity to share their stories by uploading their own videos."

This is also much more than just a TV Show. Teens from around the country can upload their own videos about how they are going green or how their schools are going green. Or even create a video with a green tip. It just a great way for teens everywhere to share green ideas with each other and inspire each other. Those videos are not only posted on the website but some even end up on the show!

If you haven't check out Eco Company yet, I encourage you to find your local listings and give it a shot. If you happen to be a parent of a tween or teen who cares about the environment, let them know about this show and how they can get more involved. And if your young adult is not passionate about the environment, have them watch the show and hopefully it will open theirs eye and inspire them to make a difference.

You can also follow Eco Company on Facebook and on Twitter at @Eco_Company.

Ecolissa - Eco & Vegan Fashion Giveaway

When you think about living a more "green" lifestyle what sorts of things come to mind? Buying natural and organic foods? Using all natural cleaning products? I bet one thing many people don't consider is clothing. For starters, conventional cotton is one of the most pesticide laden crops in the United States. Nice right? Then if you jump over to synthetics like polyester, this is a type of plastic which is made from oil, a non-renewable resource. Not the most eco-friendly of choices.

Ecolissa is an online boutique for eco and vegan fashions. Launched in September 2010, they carry only eco-friendly and vegan woman's clothing and accessories. Are you wondering what exactly eco-friendly clothing is made of? At Ecolissa you will find clothing made of natural, renewable materials like organic cotton, hemp and bamboo and even some made from recycled materials. I happen to really like these Good Society Organic Boot Cut Denim Jeans because not only are they organic, they also are made with natural dye and are fair trade. $89.99.

When I shop on any site one of the first sections I like to hit is the sale section. Currently, Ecolissa has some lovely items on sale, including the jeans I mentioned above. My eye also keeps getting drawn to this Toggery L'WREN Tunic, which is on sale for $34.99 from $70.00! Personally, I think it would go great with those jeans.

No outfit is complete without the perfect accessories right? I say to finish it off, this Angelina Clutch made from recycled vinyl restaurant seats is a great compliment to the tunic. $54.00.

Pure Bar Organic Snack Bars Review

Simple, real ingredients. That is one of the first things you will read when you stop by the Pure Bar site. I was recently introduced to these all natural snack bars and now I am hooked. Now a lot of companies like to throw the label "all natural" on their products but then once you dig deeper and look at the ingredients you find that it is not entirely true. This is not the case with Pure Bars. These snack bars are made from certified organic ingredients and are also raw, gluten-free, vegan and kosher. Because Pure Bars are minimally processed, they are between 65% and 82% raw, and they are packed with vitamins, fiber and antioxidants.

I know you are thinking "but how do they taste?" I was a little skeptical at first because generally I am not a fan of snack bars. Pure Bar was nice enough to send me some samples of each of their 6 flavors: Apple Cinnamon, Cherry Cashew, Chocolate Brownie, Cranberry Orange, Trail Mix and Wild Blueberry. The first one I tried was Cranberry Orange and boy was I pleasantly surprised. It was delicious and the orange made it very refreshing. I honestly like each flavor but my absolute favorite is the Chocolate Brownie because, well, I love almost anything chocolate. I am so happy that I can please my sweet tooth while also getting some important nutrients into my body.

Let's quickly take a look at what's in the Chocolate Brownie Pure Bar. The ingredient label reads as follows: Organic dates, organic walnuts, organic agave nectar, organic almonds, organic cashews, organic brown rice protein, organic cocoa. Nice and simple and nothing you don't recognize or can't pronounce. As for the nutrients, you get a nice helping of fiber, omega-3's, potassium and magnesium...just to mention a few.

If you are a parent like me you may be wondering if this is something your child would eat. Because that is the ultimate test, isn't it? If your kids will eat it, then you know its a win! All I have to say is that as I was enjoying my Chocolate Brownie, one of my 3.5 year old twins came over and took the half a bar I had left from my hand and devoured it. DEVOURED. So yeah, he liked it and I would bet lots of kids out there would enjoy these. They have the perfect amount of sweetness (with no added sugar!) that they are sure to enjoy.

Pure Bar currently has a pretty amazing Eco Sweepstakes running right now on Facebook. The grand prize winner will win a trip to a Luxury Eco Resort in Costa Rica along with a year's supply of Pure Bars! They also have a weekly prize of 36 bars. The sweepstakes are running now through February 21. I entered myself this earlier this week. All you have to do is visit the Pure Bar Facebook Fan Page and fill out the sweepstakes form sharing your Pure lifestyle tip. Super easy and just imagine how awesome it would be if you won!

Pure Bar is also sharing a buy one get one free coupon with us so that we can pick up some of these yummy treats. Fill out the coupon form and they will send a coupon to your email address for you to use a store near you

Please note that the opinions and views expressed here are my own. You may have a different experience with the product than I did. I received Pure Bar samples and I am being compensated for my review, but this in no way has any impact on my views.

Wordless Wednesday: Grocery Store Nap

It is a 10 minute drive from my home to Stop & Shop. My 13 monh old fell asleep on the ride there. I somehow how was able to get him out of his carseat and into the shopping cart without waking him up. He continued to sleep for the majority of my shopping trip.

Sorry for the fuzzy picture, but it was too cute to not share.

Sparkle Naturals Skin Care for Tweens Giveaway CLOSED

It seems that there is a great selection of all natural personal care products on the market these days. I think it is awesome that the green revolution has taken off and it is easier to find natural products for babies, young children and adults. However, there is a group in between that seems to have been forgotten. Tweens. At the ages of 9-12, our typical tween will no longer want to use "kid" types of shampoos and soaps but they can't necessarily use adult stuff either. Their bodies and skin are changing which requires something that is formulated just for them. But as their parent, you don't want to buy them something loaded with chemicals which leaves you in a difficult position of wondering what the heck to get for them.

Sparkle Naturals is a brand new line of all natural skin care for tweens and teens. Sparkle Naturals was founded by two sisters who realized there were very few natural products available for the tween market and wanted to fill the gap between natural baby products and adult products. They worked closely with young girls in this age group to produce a full line of beauty items which are not only safe for them, but visually appealing to them as well. I happen to love the bright, fun colors - especially the purple.

At Sparkle Naturals you will find hair care, facial care and bath & body care products all of which are made from non-toxic, organic ingredients and are free of animal products, sulfates, parabens, synthetic fragrances and artificial colorants. They even have some fun accessories like the Butterfly Bath Sponge that I really want to get for myself. I LOVE butterflies! I also like that a lot of their products like the shampoos and bath gel are available in unscented or "sweet tart." It is nice to have an unscented option for those who might be sensitive to even all natural fragrances. And the sweet tart fragrance is a sweet citrus smell made from 100% pure essential oils.

I also think it is essential for us to teach our children the importance of what we put on our bodies and how it affects us. We're not going to sit down with our babies and lecture them on why we use all natural products for them. The tween years seem like a really good time to start. We need them to understand why they should use all natural products so that they can continue to do this for their lifetime. Sparkle Naturals is a great way to get them involved in their own personal care.

If you are shopping for a young girl, Sparkle Naturals is sure to be a huge hit. These fun, hip products will make her happy while the all natural ingredients will make mom and dad happy.

Wordless Wednesday: A Little Bit of Snow

Less than 2 weeks ago we had a snowstorm that dropped 18 inches of snow on us. Than just a few days later, last Wednesday, we got another 2 feet dumped on us. So this is what 3 feet of snow looks like. I hate it.

Our deck as seen from the kitchen sliding door.

Dairy-Free Banana Muffins Recipe

Having a child with a dairy (milk) allergy I am always looking for dairy-free recipes that also taste good. This can be tricky as often times the result tastes slightly off.

I am in no way a "foodie" or expert in the kitchen. However sometimes I am good at taking parts of several different recipes and combining them together to make my own recipe that suits our needs. This happened over the weekend when I put together this dairy-free Banana Muffin Recipe. These turned out so moist and delicious. Everyone gobbled them up!

Now I used a mini muffin pan and it yielded about 30 mini muffins. You can also use a traditional size muffin pan and I am guessing this would yield about 10 muffins, give or take.

Ingredients (use organic whenever possible)
1 cup all-purpose unbleached flour
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
3 very ripe bananas, mashed
1 egg, lightly beaten
3/4 cup white sugar
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/3 cup canola oil

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease muffin pan or place in muffin liners.

2. In a large bowl, mix together dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, nutmeg, cinnamon). In a second bowl, beat together bananas, egg, sugar, vanilla and oil.

3. Stir the banana mixture into the flour mixture until moistened. Do not over mix. Spoon into muffin cups, filling about 2/3 up.

4. Bake in preheated oven. For mini muffins bake about 15 minutes. For full size muffins, bake about 20 minutes. Insert toothpick into center of muffin to test.

Enjoy!

Hey Baby, What's Your Sign?

Since Thurday, it seems that everyone on the web is talking about this new 13th zodiac sign, Ophiuchus. And when I say "talking about" what I really mean is just downright freaking out!

"OMG how can they change the signs?"
"Oh no, what is my new sign?"
"I need to remove my Scorpio tattoo!"
"The world is coming to an end! Ahhhhhhhhhhh!"

I don't normally talk about this kind of topic but I found it quite amusing. You'd it was the end of the world. The first thing I thought when I saw people discussing this was no way am I going to accept a different sign. I am 100% Aries through and through. Then when I read a little more about it I learned that "they" (whoever they are) are NOT changing the signs.

Apparently there are two types of zodiac: tropical and sidereal. This was brand new information for me, but then again I never followed astrology and zodiac all that much. But tropical zodiac, which coincides with the seasons, is what Western astrology adheres to and is not changing at all. So if you are a Westerner, than you more than likely follow tropical zodiac and this 13th sign has no impact on you whatsoever. NO IMPACT WHATSOEVER. The proposal of the 13th zodiac was for sidereal zodiac, which is fixed to constellations and practiced in the East.

So there, you can chill out. If you are reading this than more than likely this change does not affect you in any way. But if by chance you do follow sidereal astrology, here is what the new zodiac chart looks like.

Capricorn:
January 20- to February 16
Aquarius: February 16 to March 11
Pisces: March 11 to April 18
Aries: April 18 to May 13
Taurus: May 13 to June 21
Gemini: June 21 to July 20
Cancer: July 20 to August 10
Leo: August 10 to September 16
Virgo: September 16 to October 30
Libra: October 30 to November 23
Scorpio: November 23 to November 29
Ophiuchus:November 29 to December 17
Sagittarius: December 17 to January 20

Swag Bucks Games, Even More Ways To Earn

If you spend a decent amount of time on the Internet and on Facebook, you more than likely have heard of Swagbucks. Several times a day I will see Facebook friends post that they won xx amount of Swag Bucks. I have to admit, at first I ignored them and thought there must be some kind of catch. But as time went on and I kept seeing friends earning I figured it was time to give it a try. So I finally signed up back in September.

If you are not familiar with Swagbucks, here is how it works. They offer several way for you to earn their "bucks". What can you do with these Swag Bucks? Once you have collected enough, you can redeem them for prizes. There are tons of prizes to choose from like gift cards, video games and game consoles, kitchen accessories and so much more. From what I have seen, the most popular prizes are the Amazon.com gift cards. You can pretty much find anything on Amazon so redeeming for their gift cards gives you even more choices.

The most popular and easiest way is probably through Internet searches. Instead of using Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc. as your search engine. Every so often when doing these searches you will be awarded some Swag Bucks. I usually get three rewards a day. You can download their free toolbar which make sit that much easier plus you get one Swag Buck every day just for opening the Toolbar. My tip for this feature is stop using your favorites and bookmarks and just use the Swagbucks search. Instead of clicking on my inbox button or my Facebook bookmark, I will type "gmail" or "Facebook" into the Swagbucks search engine in hopes to get rewarded. The more you search the better chance you have.

Internet searches are not the only way to earn some bucks. In addition there are daily polls, surveys, special offers, Swagbucks TV, Trad Ins and so on. The most recent addition, and the most fun, are the new Swagbucks free games. These went live to everyone today, January 13. I am super luck that shortly after I signed up for Swagbucks I was chosen as a beta tester for these games and it has been fun testing them out. The Swag Bucks games are flash games and offer a variety of game styles like puzzle, arcade and word games. The one I have played the most is Snow Day where you toss snowballs up at the clouds.

So how do you earn Swag Bucks while playing games? There are two ways to play: free play and tournaments. With the free play you can be rewarded with between 1 to 5 bucks multiple times a day. I have played for as little as five minutes and received 3 Swag Bucks in return. With tournament play you buy into a game by risking a few Swag Bucks for the opportunity to win a larger amount. I have not ventured into this as I prefer free play. For more information on how the tournaments work you can check out the Swag Bucks Blog.

I still consider myself a newbie in the world of Swagbucks, but I am very happy with the few months I have been there. In the 4 months since I have joined I have earned over 1,500 Swag Bucks, which I am very pleased with. And this is by pretty much only doing searches, polls and games. If you can devote more time then you can earn more. If you are already a member of Swagbucks I encourage you to check out the games. You'll have some fun for sure. Not a member yet? Well then you must sign up! Its easy, free and fun and you have nothing to lose. And I swear there are no catches. When you sign up you will automatically receive 30 Swag Bucks. Plus if you sign up between now and January 14 at 11:59pm PST and use registration code SBGames, you will earn a bonus of 30 Swag Bucks!

Please note that the above registrationcode is for new sign ups only and will not wok for existing members. I am a member of the Swagbucks Bloggers Outreach Program however I was not compensated for this post. The opinions and views expressed here are my own and based on my personal experience with the product. You may encounter a different experience with this than I did. The Swagbucks links included within this post do contain my referral code.

Wordless Wednesday: Is That A Bobcat?

Why yes, yes it is. Spotted just a few feet from my house this past October. I was in our kitchen when I looked out the window and saw an animal walk out from under our back deck. I ran and got my camera then ran out onto the deck to snap a picture. When I took this picture he was probably about 10 yards from me and stalking something.

After a lot of googling, doing picture comparisons and even a call to the state it was determined that this was in fact a bobcat. Apparently they are pretty common around here, but this is the first time I ever saw one. Definitely freaked me out a bit.

Zoomed in a bit.

Green Goals for 2011

I know we are almost 2 weeks into 2011 already but it is never too late to set up some resolutions and goals. Every year I like to write down some "Green Goals" for myself. The way I see it, if I make just a few easy changes every year then I am well on my way to living a more sustainable life.

• Start some kind of composting. I received some good ideas from some of my readers on how to make my own worm bin. I might give that a try.

• Get my twins completely potty trained which equals 2 less kids in disposable diapers and less crap in landfills. :)

• Spend more time outside with the boys.

• Be more active as a family. Whether its dancing around the living room or playing outside. I need to get my boys, and myself, up and moving.

• Rebuild our clothes line in the Spring. Bigger and stronger this time so it doesn't break.

• Continue packing waste-free snacks and eventually lunches for kids.

• Get my hubby to cut back on his bottled water habit. I have like 10 stainless steel bottles he can use.

So those are my goals. I like to keep them rather simple and attainable. Now it's time to work on them!

What Green Goals have you set for yourself this year? I'd love to read about them.

Plum Organics on Sale at Babies R Us

I was at Babies R Us the other day when I noticed this sale so I had to pass it along. I reviewed some Plum Organics foods back in 2009 and my kids loved them. So when I saw this sale I picked up a bunch of their puffs for my 1 year old.

Now through Janaury 23, 2011:

All Plum Organics Puffs, Fiddlesticks and Fruity Fingerfuls are 3 for $8.00.

All Plum Organics Food Pouches are 10 for $10.00.

I also had a $5.00 Rewards R Us coupon so I was able to get 3 containers of Puffs for $3.00.
