Google Chromecast Audio Review

One of my favorite things about the evolution of technology is digital music and how easy it has become to play our favorite songs crystal clear and wherever we go. I'm not sure how I survived before the days of wireless Bluetooth speakers but I know I never want to go back. I have amassed a small collection of them over the past few years which means not only do we have one on every level of our home (3) but also in multiple rooms per level. Now one complaint I've had over wireless speakers is their inability to link together so that I can have the same music streaming on more than one speaker at the same time.

Enter the new Google Chromecast Audio. This cute little gadget brings a new level to streaming your digital music. Not only can you use it with current wireless speakers, but also with older speakers that have an audio jack in them. And because the Google Chromecast Audio uses Wi-Fi instead of Bluetooth, you can stream in hi-res sound.

Kitchen Speaker

Now as I mentioned I have quite a few speakers in my home so I thought I would test the two Google Chromecast Audio devices I received on my most heavily used speakers. The one that gets the most usage by far is the one located in our kitchen. The other is on the third level and uses in the master bedroom and bathroom. Before dealing with the hardware you first need to download the Google Home app which is what you use to set up and control the Chromecast Audio devices. They need to be plugged into an outlet as well as plugged into your speaker in order to set up and play music. Once you have individual speakers set up in the app, then you can form a group with as many speakers as you like, so long as each speaker has a Chromecast Audio attached to it. So I went ahead and created my "house" group with my two speakers. Overall it maybe took me 5-10 minutes to set up everything and be ready to listen to music throughout my house.

Spotify is my favorite music app and luckily is compatible with Chromecast Audio, so I was able to launch it from the Google Home app, select playlist and then stream the music to my group of two speakers. It was awesome! The feature is hands down the best part of this device and is a game changer for me. The music was clear and though each device was on a different level of my house, there were no breaks or issues with the sound.

There are a few cons that I have in regards to the Google Chromecast Audio that I am hioing newer models will address down the road.  The first is that right now they aren't compatible with your iTunes music. This is a bit of a drawback as I am sure many iOS users out there have a ton of music purchased and saved on their phones. I do believe that this feature is coming soon though, so that will be great. In the meantime you can use it with other popular apps like Spotify, Pandora and iHeartRadio.

The second con for me is that the Google Chromecast Audio does not have a battery so it has to be plugged in to a wall outlet in order to stream music. Now part of the reason why I have rechargeable wireless speakers is so I can use them anywhere in my house without needing to plug them in. When using them with the Chromecast Audio I have to make sure they are placed near an outle which is not always in a convenient place for a speaker, particularly in our faimly room. I sincerely hope that future models of the device include a rechargeable battery so it can be used anywhere.

Overall, I do really like the new Google Chromecast Audio especially the ability to have multi-room play. That is really a huge deal for me and I love it. Since I have yet to find something else that does this for me, that alone makes it worthwhile if you don't mind spending the money to get one for each speaker. A few tweaks in the future could really make this product perfect.

Every April as Earth Day nears, many of us wonder what little things (or big things) we can do in our home to benefit the environment. Recycling, composting and conserving are all fairly easy things that come to mind. A big way to save both energy and water is buy replacing an old washer and dryer. A few years ago we replaced our top loading, 15 year old set (which died) with a front loading LG set and wow did we see a difference. Now I'm not saying you should toss a perfectly good, working appliance, but if you're in need of a replacement, Best Buy has a wide selection of Energy Star certified models to choose from. Why Energy Star?
I know it's common to wonder just how much of a difference and Energy Star certified washer or dryer can make over an older model that is not Energy Star. This is really perfect for things like delicates or even workout gear. I love this concept. As someone who is at the gym 4-5 days a week, I do a lot of smaller loads and honestly, it's wasteful. I am a self proclaimed techie; I just love new technology and gadgets and all that fun kind of stuff. Something that has always intrigued me is "Connected Home" tech products, such as smart thermostats, wireless lightning or smart security systems. Up until now I've never had a chance to play with anything like that, but I recently got my hands on some Philip Hue Personal Wireless Lighting products and now I am in love.

When you are looking to add smart products into your home, the first thin you need to make sure you have is a wireless router capable of handling it all plus whatever devices you have. In our house we have a lot, and I do mean a lot, of devices that are running at any given time and we were probably pushing it with our old Netgear router. But do not let the size intimidate you, the installation was very easy for this moderately tech savvy lady. Start to finish it took me just under and hour, and that was with a call to my internet service provider to find out what my PIN number was. Without that call, I would have been done in 45 minutes or less. Once I had my new router set up, I was ready to move on to the really cool stuff: the wireless lighting! I was sent both the Philips hue White and Ambiance Starter Kit and the Philips hue Go from Best Buy to try out.

There are so many features I love about this but the most important functionality wise is the ability to program your lights. This means you can set up a schedule that will have your lights turning on and off when you want so that it looks like your home when you are not. There is also an alarm function so you can have yourself wake up to soft light instead of a blaring alarm clock. I've been using that a lot and it has been wonderful.

Then there is just the cool aspect of being able to change the color of the lights to pretty much anything. The app comes with a few "scenes" already loaded into to use and you can also create countless scenes of your own. I placed two of the bulbs in our bedroom and one in the home office with the hue Go and I already can't wait to get the rest of the house connected! The reading scene I use a ton when working at my desk or reading in bed.

This little portable light has quickly become my new best friend. I am a big time reader and my Kindle comes with me wherever I go. Now when I'm home, you can pretty much find me reading anywhere: living room couch, kitchen table, in bed or on my reading chair in the office. I love having this light available to bring in any room with me and I can soften the color and brightness to suit me. So overall I am more than pleased with all this new techie stuff that I've added to our home. Not only did I have a lot of fun setting it all up, but they provide great functionality as well. I'm hoping I can expand my hue lighting into more rooms over time.

I can't remember the last time I sat behind a desktop computer. For the last 10 years my laptops have been my lifeline, making it easy to work from home while also being with my kiddos. The only thing that kind of concerned me was the lack of DVD/CD drive, which helps make this light at 6.1 lbs and 1.2" thin. But then I thought "When was the last time you even put a disc in your current laptop?" The answer is I can't even remember. So obviously it is not as important a feature as it once was. And if it came down to it, an external drive could always be purchased, though I don't think I would need it. So my next stop is going to be to head to my local Best Buy to get a little hands on experience, especially with the touchscreen, and then hopefully I'll be bringing home this new HP laptop for Mother's Day!

As parents, aren't we always following our kids around trying to snap as many photos as possible so we can hold onto all of the memories they create? I am a lover of all things technology, whether it is the best new smart phone to fit in my pocket or a new beautiful television to mount on my living room wall. As a mom, a good camera to capture all of my kids special moments and silly moments and just every day moments is an absolute must. It may be a cliche, but they really do grow up so fast and I want to be able to capture those memories for us to hold onto forever. And you know, possibly embarrass them down the road as teenagers. We are also entering a new phase of parenting and that is sports. Sure my kids have been playing hockey for years, but my nine year old, for the first time, will be on a travel hockey team. So a camera that can take fast paced action photos is absolutely going to  be on my Christmas list this year.
