I Strongly Dislike Daylight Savings Time

And I am willing to bet that many other moms or parents of young children agree with me. I dread DST every time it rolls around. I am fortunate that my kids have pretty good sleeping habits. Everyone is in bed between 7:oo - 7:30 pm and actually sleeping by 8:00 pm. The twins (2.5) wake up around 6:00 am and my preschooler (4.5) around 7:00 am. While I'm not all that happy with the 6:00 am daily wake up calls, I can't complain too much.

In enters DST to screw it all up. Even though we are putting them to bed at the "new" normal time, their internal clocks are still set to the old time. So yes, now the twins are awake at 5:00 am and the oldest at 6:00 am. That is way too early for this pregnant mama. Especially when she is trying her hardest to stay up to watch the Yankees games at night. Trying and failing mind you - I fell asleep during the 7th inning last night and missed all of the excitement. Anyway, so now the entire day is thrown off because their bodies are still functioning on the old time. I'm making them wait till 11 for lunch and 11:30 for naps to try and readjust them, but its not working yet and I am left with very cranky boys.

I imagine it is going to be at least a week before we can get everyone adjusted. I sure hope it doesn't take any longer than that! I am convinced that the people who came up with DST did not have small children to go through this with otherwise they would have kept their mouths shut.

P.S. I just realized that I also complained about this here back after the March DST change. See, that is how much I dislike it!

  1. farmers came up with daylight savings. so they weren't taking care of the kids, the moms were, and if anything they had the kids out there doing chores, so it wasn't a big deal.

we only switched to DST a couple years ago, and I am not a fan at all. I love having the extra daylight at night in the spring/summer but it makes it dark in the mornings.

all in all, I am with ya. just not a fan.

  2. I wish we'd just stay one time all year round. I understand where it came from but I'd be happy to give it up now.

I never really minded the switch to standard time in the fall, but I did mind the switch to daylight savings time in the summer because the kids didn't sleep as well in the light.

  3. Here in Saskatchewan, we are the only province in Canada that doesn't have DST. We are the same time year round and, although it's all I've known, I do love it.

The only adjustment for us is changing my PVR to record my shows at the correct time...a minor inconvenience. :)

I think I'd cry if my kids woke up 1 hr early all the time - I hope they readjust their little clocks soon, mama!
